Natural Science Requirement

This section includes answers to a number of questions concerning the science requirement for specific programs and what courses will apply.

Under the old requirements, the science requirement for students planning to earn a degree from the School of Business Administration is one course on either the quarter system or the semester system. That course does not have to include a laboratory.

Under old and new requirements, the science requirement for a bachelor of science degree with a major in Design and Merchandising (one of the two degrees available to a student concentrating in either Apparel Design or Fashion Merchandising) is 24 semester hours. Such students are subject to the restrictions of the science requirement for a bachelor of arts degree but must take additional courses to earn at least 24 hours. Under either old or new requirements, the additional sciences may include obvious subjects such as biology, psychology and chemistry, but may also include Statistics 1020, Mathematics 1500, 1800, and 2010, and Computer Science courses at the 1000 level or above.

Under new requirements, students transferring courses to meet the Physical Science or Third Science requirement may not use courses with a "PHS" (Physical Science) designation to fulfill the requirement, if pursuing a degree from the College of LIberal Arts and Sciences.

Under the old requirements the bachelor of science in Criminal Justice requires only 11 credit hours of Natural Science.

Under the old requirements, the following programs do not require a foreign language but do require 60 semester hours of natural sciences:

Bachelor of Science with a Major in Geology
Bachelor of Science in Medical Dietetics
Bachelor of Science with a Major in Nutrition & Food Science
Bachelor of Science in Physics
Bachelor of Science with a Major in Psychology

With the exception of the Bachelor of Science with a Major in Psychology, each of these programs has specific requirements in science courses that result inevitably in a student accumulating 60 hours of science.

In psychology, however, not more than 33 hours in psychology courses will apply toward the 60 hours required in natural sciences and the remaining 27 hours of sciences are not specified. Students who declared the major in psychology prior to September 6, 1993 are eligible to complete it with a total of only 30 semester hours in Psychology courses.

It is important to point out that although the old major required only 30 hours, students who are intent on taking only 27 hours of science other than psychology must have at least 33 hours in psychology to bring the total to 60 hours.

Non-Matriculated Status

Non-matriculated status enables students to take any undergraduate course for which the prerequisite is met. Courses may be taken from the following colleges: Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts and Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Courses, credits and grades will be posted to the university's transcript. However, these will be used toward fulfillment of a degree only after formal admissions is granted through the Department of Admissions, Welcome Center, 42 West Warren.

The holder of non-matriculated status is ineligible for any type of loan, grant or scholarship that is administered by Wayne State University.

Nursing

With the exception of FTIAC recipients of the Presidential Scholarship and students who are Registered Nurses, students who plan to earn a degree in Nursing enter Liberal Arts & Science in Pre-Nursing. For admission to the professional program, which begins only in the fall, students must complete the following prerequisites:

  1. Completion of the following courses or equivalents with no grade lower than a "C": ENG 1020, BIO 1510, BIO 2870, CHM 1020 and 1030, PSY 1010 and 2400, ANT 2100 OR SOC 2000, and Math Proficiency.
  2. Completion of at least 30 hours including courses listed above. English 1010, 1080, and MAT 0910 do not apply toward this requirement. The GPA for prerequisite courses must be at least 2.50.
  3. Completion of required courses by the end of winter term.

The deadline for applying for admission to the professional program is March 31. Applications are available in Suite 100, Cohn Building.

The College of Nursing holds informational meetings several times each semester. Prospective applicants should get a copy of that schedule by calling 577-4082.

The professional program in Nursing takes three years to complete. While there are some students who complete pre-professional course requirements in one year and are admitted, the student who is likely to do so is one who has developed strong study habits and who has minimal responsibilities outside of school. It should be noted that such students will inevitably use several spring/summer terms to finish other requirements of the College of Nursing and the university. Most students take two years prior to entering the professional program and in doing so, manage to complete additional requirements without such heavy loads in spring/summer terms.

Beyond the traditional program described above, Nursing offers the bachelor of science in Nursing RN Completion program for students who have an associate's degree in Nursing and are licensed as RNs.

Students who have earned a baccalaureate degree may pursue the practice of nursing through the Second Career/Second Degree program by completing the following prerequisite courses with no grade lower than a "C": BIO 1510, BIO 220, BIO 2870, CHM 1020 and 1030, PSY 2400, Sociology, Philosophy & Letters or Visual & Performing Arts, Anthropology or a Foreign Culture course, and the English Proficiency Examination. The professional program is designed to be completed in four consecutive semesters.

The College of Nursing also offers academically talented students who have completed the Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) the opportunity to earn an MSN in less time than it would take to complete a BSN and the MSN. Students must meet the following criteria for admission to this program:

  1. Have completed an ADN with an GPA of 3.3 or higher.
  2. Be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse.
  3. Have worked as an RN for at least one year.

This program is similar to the AGRADE in the College of Liberal Arts and Science in that it allows a student to accumulate up to 15 semester hours that will apply to both the BSN and the MSN degrees.

Old Requirements

Wayne State University has two sets of core requirements--the name given to courses that all students must take. These are General Education Requirements and "Old Requirements".
