Old Requirements

Wayne State University has three sets of core requirements--the name given to courses that all students must take. These are General Education Requirements (Fall 2005 or later) and (Spring 1987-Spring 2005), and "Old Requirements". The date of entry into the University, the status upon entry, the number of credits transferred, or a combination of these conditions determine the applicable set of core requirements.

The "Old Requirements", or Non-General Education requirements are intended for all students who were regularly admitted and first enrolled at Wayne State within the guidelines below:

  1. were fully admitted to the University prior to Fall 1987;
  2. began at WSU between Fall 1987 and Spring/Summer 1990 and transferred 13 or more credits; or
  3. began at WSU between Fall 1990 and Spring/Summer 1991, but completed college coursework elsewhere prior to Fall 1988, and transferred 13 or more credits.

The specific requirments listed below apply only to students graduating with degrees from the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Fine, Performing & Communication Arts.

  1. Total Hours: minimum of 120 semester hours
     
  2. Semester Hours in Professional Courses: Not more than 16 credit hours

  3.  Grade Point Average: minimum overall of 2.00

  4.  Semester Hours at 300-Level or Above: Minimum of 15 hours required

  5. Group Requirements:

    English I: English 102 or equivalent
    English II: English 200-level or above

    Foreign Language: Completion of the third semester in one language. See Foreign Language Requirement for exceptions.

    Natural Science: Eleven semester hours
    Life Science
    Physical Science
    Third Science Course
    At least one laboratory course

    Social Science: Eleven semester hours
    Minimum of three courses
    At least two departments

    Humanities: Eleven semester hours
    Minimum of three courses
    At least two departments

  7. English Proficiency Requirement
  8. Mathematics Proficiency Requirement

 

Restrictions on Credit

  1. Residence: last 30 hours must be earned at Wayne State University.
  2. Not more than 16 hours in professional courses (e.g. Business, Education, Engineering, etc.) will apply toward graduation unless the major explicitly requires more than that amount.
  3. Not more than 64 hours from a two-year school or schools will apply.
  4. Not more than 46 hours in the same Subject Area Code will apply unless the major specifies a greater amount.
  5. Not more than 32 hours earned by examination will apply.
  6. Refer to appropriate college sections in the Undergraduate Bulletin for additional information.
  7. Courses taken at Wayne State University to fulfill the Group Requirements listed above may not be taken on a "Passed / Not Passed" basis.

Courses which may be used to satisfy Group Requirements:

Life Science: Anthropology 211; Biology; NFS 203; Psychology.

Physical Science: Astronomy; Chemistry; one Computer Sci (200-level or above) or one Mathematics (180 or above); Geology; Philosophy (Logic) 185, 186, 520, 535, 539, 575; Physics (except 202); Physical Science.

Social Science: Anthropology (except physical anthropology); Africana Studies 221; Chicano- Boricua Studies 201, 241, 242, 243, 311, 312; Economics; Geography; History; Political Science; Sociology; Urban Studies. Courses that meet the American Government requirement apply also to the Social Science Group Requirement.

Humanities: American Studies; Art History; Africana Studies 201; Chicano-Boricua Studies 210, 211; Classics (except 120 or 124); Communication: SPC 216, 321; SPR 301; Film 201, 202; Humanities; literature in any language; Music History; Near Eastern 200, 201, 303; Philosophy (except 185, 186, 520, 535, 539, 575); Theatre 101, 102, 103, 510, 512 535, 539, 575.

American Government: HIS 103; HIS 204 + 205; HIS 516 + 517; P S 101 or 103 or 201 + 202. Social Science 191 + 192.
